Starcraft 2: Wings Of Liberty is the beginning of a 3 part trilogy where we follow the story of the Terran race. I’m not going to spoil the story so you can go look it up. There was a lot of mixed feelings when playing the single player campaign. It wasn’t bad, and it wasn’t epic either.

The story was a bit weak, and soft. It was trying to be more of a Hollywood cliché romance movie than the gritty, edgy, dark, mature action that was in the original Starcraft. The dialogue lacks the dramatic build in conversations, which makes it hard to connect with characters, where sometimes it can also get a bit dull. But I do give props to Blizzard for creating some of the most amazing cut scenes in gaming history.

The campaign mode feels like a dubbed down version of Mass Effect 2. They added features such as exploring your ship, interacting with crew members, hiring mercenaries, upgrading units, and doing research. The objectives in game felt like rehashes of  the old Starcraft, which is great. But some of the new missions lacked creativity that were too long, and boring.  With the amount of side missions being brought in the single player campaign it loses the focus of the story, and tends to get confusing at times. Though it’s a nice touch to have those extra features and eye candy, it could have been better.

The multiplayer mode on the other hand is loads of fun. Aside from the new units, better graphics, and the achievement system, they haven’t done anything drastic to the multiplayer experience. The maps are still small, but the races are balanced out, which is a big plus. Also, the addition to creating ultimate weapons for each race is pretty cool, but it takes time to build. Like in the previous Starcraft you have to be quick because in 10 mins you will either be dominating or the one being dominated. That’s what makes the game so popular, and fun.

Overall after 12 years Blizzard could have done more to the franchise. I feel that ever since the departure of Starcraft’s original creators and Activsion joining Blizzard, it has caused Starcraft 2 to fall short. It’s still the best RTS multiplayer in the world and it’s worth buying, but as far as story goes.. it’s not as exciting as the original Starcraft. With that said.. I hope I don’t have to wait for another 10 years for the next expansions to come out.

PROS:

- Graphics, Cinematics
- Multiplayer
- Mass Effect 2 feel
- Added Achievements, Upgrades, Hire Mercs
-  Online voice activation
-  Classic feel to Starcraft 1

CONS:

- Story is weak, and very cliché
- Campaign dialogue is mediocre (no dramatic buildup)
- Colors in game are too much of a Warcraft feel.
- Not much has improved after 12 years
