The 90s Blue Ribbon Campaign

The mid to late 90s were the fun days of the internet. It was the time where there were no boundaries or restrictions on how exactly a website should be structured. You could open up notepad on windows 95, and just code away plastering images, and random text that you liked. This is where HTML 1.0 was born, and how I learned to make websites using the <center></center> tags.

My classmates scrutinized me for using those tags back then. They thought I was using a “home editor or generator” from Fortunecity or Geocities free web hosting. They thought I was cheating since it was a very clean structured website that I was writing down. Even though I explained to them countless times that I did my research online they still didn’t believe me.

Anyways… the point that I am trying to get at, those webpages had a unique personality. There was no Myspace layout, Friendster , Tumblr, Facebook etc.. it was your very own social layout. Nobody told you what you can or cannot do in your surrounding box. You had complete control of what you made, and how you shared it. This is where the Blue Ribbon Campaign comes into play.

I used to place this on the bottom of my pages back then because it had real meaning to it. So I decided that Digfest should have one. This is to remind us of the days when the internet was an amazing place to explore. Where social networks and media did not restrict our way of thinking.

So I ask you to copy the code below, and paste it on your site or share it with friends. You can also be creative, and make your own Blue Ribbon Campaign logo.

“We shouldn’t build a technology to colour, or grey out, what people say. The media in general is balanced, although there are a lot of issues to be addressed that the media rightly pick up on.”
