Bulletstorm Is Fun To Play But Keep the Kids Away

I just beat Bulletstorm for PC in less than 7 hours since it’s official launch under normal mode. The game is absolutely amazing with a pretty good storyline, and a lot of action. This game extends itself almost above a mature rating without the nudity involved. It matches the gore of Unreal Tournament, and adds a lot of explicit dialogues which many parents might find vulgar or offensive.
Since I upgraded my graphics card from a 5770 to a 6950 modded making it a 6970. I can play this game at high settings with AA set to 8x. I manually adjusted my AMD Catalyst profile to AA Enhanced Application Setting, and set the Anisotropic to 16x. With these settings the game runs flawlessly, and beautiful at 1080p as you can see with the screenshots I’ve posted.
Aside from trying to spoil the storyline or explain how everything works I’ll leave that up to you to enjoy. There are more than enough reviews about this game on the internet. I’m just here to focus on specifics. With that said, I’ll go straight to the complaints about this game. Now this game could have been perfect, but of course every game has it’s nitches.
I felt the solo campaign A.I. was a bit weak. Just like other fps games with group A.I. missions. Apparently while doing the solo play, all enemies are directed to you, and not your teammates. Even if you are the farthest from the group they will still go after you. Your group A.I. will shoot the enemies, and knock them down, but it will take them forever to kill one. So in other words you have to do 98 percent of the work.
I felt like they could have notched up the balance of the A.I. especially on normal mode. I understand the whole I want to take control of the game, and kill everyone. Ya that’s great and all, but when you got a ton of guys coming after you it’s hard enough to handle all of them at once. They should have made an option for the A.I. teammates to be passive or aggressive. But at least they are smart enough in not getting stuck when they follow you from behind. They also don’t have trouble taking cover or moving when they need to. The best part, if you go ahead of your teammates and manage to lose them they magically appear once you flip the switch to the next checkpoint.
Now for the sound issues. I have nothing wrong with the sound itself, but the way they mastered it. There is way too much highs in the game, and you can literally hear the hissing in your ears while wearing headphones. I had to lower the sfx down so the hissing doesn’t irritate me when I play. Even the cutscenes were poorly equalized, and you can hear distortions when it gets loud with explosions. I hope they fix this with the next patch.
As far as the style of gameplay, the shooting may not be suited for people who want a more realistic approach. This is more like Unreal Tournament where you keep shooting till you either get a headshot or they go down with a full clip of ammo. You have to be really precise in getting those headshots, but it doesn’t take long to adapt to it. That’s also the reason why they have the environment to balance out the game since you can kick/pull enemies towards deadly objects or off some endless pit.
For the Co-Op mode I would have expected more for the 60 dollar price. You will only be able to play with 3 other players online using Anarchy mode. In Anarchy mode you will fight off hordes of enemies while you find creative ways to gain skill points to advance to the next stage. It’s fun, but I wish there was a 4 Co-Op campaign edition.
Apart from all the nitches, this is a great fps game. The single player campaign will keep you on your toes from start to finish, and you will have loads of fun. Also the dialogue we’ll keep you entertained, and you might find yourself laughing at stupid things, and I mean really stupid things (As shown in the video below). Even if the campaign is short the replay value will keep you coming back for more. Let’s just hope Bulletstorm 2 gets more hours of play, and a better Co-Op/Multiplayer system in the future.
*Don’t watch this video if you don’t want to get spoiled.
