Crysis 1 Vs. Crysis 2 PC Review [Clip]

Crysis 2 has been out for a couple of days, and people have been buzzing about it’s smooth performance. But is Crysis 2 better in graphics, and gameplay when it comes to using the new Cry Engine 3?

(Crysis 2 Subway)

Crysis 2 is a game totally different from Crysis 1. You really can’t compare the gameplay since Crysis 1 was more about having a realistic open environment. In Crysis 2 it’s more of a hollywood fast pace action with a restricted environment in NYC. So for people who played Crysis 1 that love the free roaming, stealth, and all out destruction. You won’t find that in Crysis 2.

Crysis 2 goes back to the original linear type of fps gameplay just like most fps games in the market. You are more focused on the objective, and it’s more direct. You won’t be able to blow up cars or break trees with your bare hands like in Crysis 1. You can throw as many grenades as you want at a car, and it won’t move from it’s place. In other words, you can’t mess around anymore.

The graphics in Crysis 2 does not represent the full strength of Cry Engine 3 like the demonstrations you see on the promo videos. The reason behind this is because Crysis 2 went multi-platform. Crytek had to level on a certain graphics medium to keep it consistent with the console, and the PC. So even if the PC version looks better in max settings it still won’t achieve that high end realistic effect like Crysis 1.

Crysis 2 on PC looks more like a very high Direct X 9 than a Direct X 10 game like Crysis 1. The colors in Crysis 2 has a warmer vibrant feel to it, and the textures seem low quality, a bit flat, and blurred. Some areas might remind you of the graphics in Left 4 Dead 2, but with much higher detail. It still looks amazing though, and it fits perfectly with the closed NYC environment. But it’s not what PC enthusiasts are looking for.

The whole point of Crysis 1 on the PC was to capitalize on the graphics technology. That’s why you won’t be able to see Crysis 1 on any console unless it’s powerful enough to handle a big world with all those filters turned on.  Even my 6950 modified to a 6970 can’t keep a constant 40fps without dropping below th 30 mark. There is no other game like it. In the next few years people will still go back to Crysis 1 to test out their latest graphics card performance, but not Crysis 2. Crysis 2 is already optimized, and runs at 60fps at max settings so there is no sense of challenge.

Crysis world

(Crysis 1 World)

The Storyline (I won’t spoil) continues after Crysis 1. Aliens have taken over NYC, and if you were hoping for Nomad or Psycho returning that’s not going to happen. In Crysis 2 you are some “mute” guy named Alcatraz that got busted up really badly, and the only thing keeping him (you) alive is the Nanosuit. So there is a very big gap in the story on what happened with Nomad, and Psycho. Let’s hope Crysis 3 will bring them back.  They better not be dead Crytek or I will be really disappointed. No offense but Nomad, and Psycho were the main heroes in Crysis 1, and they had personality. It made the game more interesting.

For the controls, and combat situations it’s a lot easier to control the new Nanosuit. They minimized the options of the Nanosuit so speed, and power are only available through keyboard commands. When you run you hold shift when you want to jump higher you hold space. They added some cool new features including stealth kill, kicking cars, death from above drops, automatic ledge grabbing, and the famous sliding while shooting. But you won’t be using much of that in single player mode only multiplayer.

Also they added other features that will help you improve your Nanosuit against incoming enemies, but you would need to kill aliens in order for you to collect, and unlock those features. Even if you don’t manage to unlock the rest of the features after beating the game.  You will still be able to load up your previous missions and retain the amount of nano collections you had. You will also keep the skills you unlocked during the process.

Crysis Cutscene

(Crysis 2 above, Crysis 1 below)

The only thing I don’t like about the controls is the crouch button. When you crouch you have to press C instead of ctrl which is right next to X button for the tactical options menu. So when I am in the middle of a fire fight, and I’m trying to crouch I end up hitting the X button instead, and end up dying. They also don’t have prone anymore since there is not enough foliage to hide in (pun intended).  But seriously you won’t need it since it’s not about being stealthy anymore. It’s all about mowing down your enemies.

Now for the A.I. I would say it’s horrible. They are not the smartest of the bunch, and probably a lot worse than Crysis 1. There have been many incidents during each mission where the A.I would try to throw a grenade at my direction. The grenade would end up hitting an object or building and would bounce back, and kill them.

Not only that but sometimes the A.I won’t respond to loud noises. They would look really lost, and won’t be able to track where the noise is coming from. In Crysis 1 you make a noise the A.I. would be there in a heart beat, and that’s in the jungle not a closed city.

Psycho Crysis

(Crysis 1 Psycho)

Crysis 2 is a whole new game, and it’s breaking away from it’s traditional style that we once enjoyed with Crysis 1, but it’s not a bad thing. If you played other fps games such as Modern Warfare, and Halo then Crysis 2 won’t be a problem. For those expecting Crysis 2 to be like Crysis 1 as the graphics, and performance package, that’s not going to happen. Maybe in Crysis 3.  But overall Crysis 2 is great, and you will enjoy it a lot. It’s a different, and fun experience that won’t disappoint. The multiplayer mode improved lots from Crysis Wars. It’s very addicting especially when you are able to unlock new weapons, and rank up. It brings a whole new level to the franchise. But of course Crysis 1 still wins in the graphics, and physics department. Just cross your fingers that Crysis 3 will maximize the graphics, gameplay, and performance while keeping the series a more open world.

  1. Great comparison.
But you know you can reset the crouch button from C to Ctrl in the options, that’s what I did since it bothered me too.

I haven’t played the original Crysis but I think the jungle setting looks more interesting and prettier than the “urban jungle” in Crysis 2.

  2. that’s great but i never difficult to keyboard changes, crouch button. well, i more like crysis 2, because the setting is manhattan city. the graphic maybe’ weaker’ than crysis 1, but the city look soo good. the lightning, effect, looks realistic. anyway i dont care much about graphic. the important is gameplay. the enemy in crysis 2, i have to agree with you, they look little stupid or something. but only a little. no problem.
ok, no free roam, but i want to finish mission a soon as possible, not doing stupid thing like, break trees. so no free roam in crysis 2? no problem. that’s my opinion after play crysis 2.

  3. Its not worth even comparing, obviously a game built for the PC with a higher version of DirectX is going to be much better graphics then a console port with DX9, a better comparison would be comparing Crysis2 to a modded version of farcry 1, as they use the same DirectX version, just with different an older engine vs a newer one. So far, Crysis2 is only comparable to old DX9 games like farcry or oblivion, I would say its about the same Graphics as fallout3, but not quite as good as Half-life 2 fakefactory.

  4. so, it won’t make my laptop going to be “lagging”, smoother instead :)

  5. @Anonymous.

That’s the most ridiculous post regarding DirectX I’ve ever read. A mainstream FPS using DX9 is always going to look much better than a FPS 7 years its senior, modded or not.

You do realize that Crysis (2007) on DX9 looks much better than all of the games you mentioned running on the same version of DX right? Heck.. Crysis on DX9 is comparable to, if not better than, current DX10/11 games. I know this because my eyes work.

DX9 doesn’t equal inferior graphics and Crysis 2 on DX9 should not be compared to games from 2004. DirectX isn’t a magical “make my game’s graphics good” button.

P.S. I thought Crysis 2, gameplay and story-wise, was mediocre.

  6. Great review, Crysis 2 definitely seems like a great game. I have been a big fan of the first Crysis game and hope that this one upholds the reputation. I cannot wait to play this game; I will definitely put this at the top of my Blockbuster queue list. As a DISH Network customer/employee, it’s easy for me to get tired of TV, so Blockbuster is a great way to mix things up. I like Blockbuster the best, because not only can I rent games, but also movies and blu-rays all at the same price. If you make the switch to DISH, you can get 3 months of Blockbuster for free. If anyone is interested, you can find more info available at http://bit.ly/m86n4Y.

  7. i feel like they took crysis 1 and dumbed down the gameplay so that your average COD fanboy could enjoy it.

  8. They took what made Crysis 1 so amazing chucked it in the bin and replced it with something a teenage boy could enjoy on his mothers old computer.

    Greedy idiots rule the world.

    Cheers.

  9. the graphics change doesent bother me much, but after playing crysis 2 oh @#$^#$ (spoiler alert) besides prophet it had almost no affiliation to the first game. The aliens arent some flying squid with ice guns no they are blobs of gelly in an exoskeleton, if you want the action then go ahead and buy it but if you want a sequal to the first then wait and see for Crysis 3

  10. @Teehee, @bacon, @Aaron: You’re definitely right!
I am a big fan of Crysis, cause it brought all that stuff to us we always wanted to have in a game and all developers talked about but never did it. I totally enjoyed the destructible environment (ya, not everything, but more than in most other games even today!), upgrading your weapon so fast an easily and the AI was very good, comes close to the one in FEAR. And I was totally happy about the tank mission in Crysis, ’cause it was the first time, that a tank in game could be driven like a real tank, over trees and stuff.

But Crysis 2 is just like all the other FPS out there. And also the story is so lame. I really had to convince myself to keep playing after the first third of the game. I still haven’t finished the last level ’cause it bored the shit out of me with this stupid fucked up gameplay (and because it crashed). There are so many things they absolutely did wrong, especially the fucking checkpoint shit (I wanna play around with the nanosuit and weapons, not just running from checkpoint to checkpoint!). And also at the beginning it looked very poor, just after the High Texture Package it was suitable. But at all this game wasn’t worth the money I spend for it. Sad, I really expected a worthy sequel to Crysis.

  11. Okay, now just finished the last level. No big end boss at the end, nothing comparable to the first game with that huge and georgeous fight at the end. Just lame.
And they tried to make the story interesting, but I would prefer to forget Crysis 2 and keep going the story of Crysis, otherwise Crysis 3 will be crap too. What a shame this game series already died with the second game.
