Girl Gamers: The Mystery

Eileen Gaming, News October 2, 2011 at 2:36 am

Inside massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG), when a gamer meets a female-portrayed character, most likely the chances are that the person playing that character is a guy. So why aren’t women playing the girl characters in the games?

It’s because women don’t usually play video games.

Guys, on the other hand, love to experience the full game play by trying out different characters in a−console or computer based−video game (if the option is available). The vast difference between the playable characters is not only in its physical attributes, but also in the character’s strengths and weaknesses.
For example, some online games have characters that are mainly “tank,” which means that they have more physical strength, health, and gun power than that of the other characters; but are slower in reaction time (and so on, and so forth). Other characters in RPGs can also be a “thief” where the main abilities include stealth, high agility, and low health. Some games, like The Legend of Zelda, require a more strategic line of thought (which women have) to solve in-game puzzles. Even with these awesome attributes to the games, this still doesn’t answer the question as to why there aren’t enough gamer girls in the world.

Avert your eyes, kiddies. This is going to be ugly! From Postal 2.

Here’s one reason for you: men like violence and gore. Women? They like posies and cute things. Yes, that’s not the total truth, but what is true is that both genders are extremely different both physically and mentally so it’s not surprising that the interests are poles apart as well. Men like video games like Call of Duty: Black Ops, which is a first-person shooter (FPS) video game set during the Cold War, where you play as Special Forces soldiers to try and complete missions, assassinations, and to support resistance movements (just to name a few). Exciting isn’t it? Even with their popular single player campaign, Black Ops is widely known for its online multiplayer experience (only IF you ignore the fact that the majority of players are really pre-pubescent 10-year-olds yelling obscenities and racist remarks over the microphone).

Other than that, men rule!

Where’s the plate and napkin?

Eh, not really…
The REAL reason is because of marketing. Say is with me: Mar-ket-ing.

This is why there are, supposedly, a lot more men than women that take to video games. Gaming industries sell video games that are geared towards the male population. No right-minded woman wants to play gory, war-based, and highly violent games (e.g. Battlefield 3; beta version is already out!), Even if there are more games that are female-friendly now (compared to 30 years ago), are men still dominate the gaming world?

Most people that you would come across would say “Yes.” Women would rather go out shopping for the latest fashion product than sit in front of their television set and play a science-fiction, FPS video game where you have to wear a futuristic nanosuit, fight against Koreans and aliens all along the coast of the Philippines. That’s just plain ridiculous!

Ridiculous it is, but not impossible.

Here’s a reality check: There are more woman than men who play video games today. It’s true! Women don’t want to talk about video games or how many zombies they killed in one hour. The only time they would sit down in front of the tube is when there’s a chick flick playing, right?

Am I doing this right?

Wrong! There are still a few women whom like to play puzzle games on their computer and PlayStation 3 (like me). It’s surprising that there are more girl gamers than guy gamers, but why aren’t they out in the open? To me, women are like a sexier version of gay men “in the closet”—minus the testosterone and balls.

In online community game forums, websites, and clubs; men rule with an iron fist. Where are the women again? The thing is that there are more women that are casual gamers than men (the hardcore gamers who play for the “trophies” when completing in-game missions) because it is more fun to play games that have a relaxed feel to them, like LocoRoco (PlayStation).

LocoRoco is a family-friendly game that doesn’t consist of constant button combinations nor does it need any real critical thinking with strategy (I know this, because I own it). It’s not one of those FPS games that require you to dodge and kill enemies; it is the kind that require little thought and a lot of action. The main idea of this game is to save these little round jelly-like creatures, called LocoRoco, from the evil Moja Troop (black, flying, spider-like monsters whom eats these innocent cuties!). With today’s advancement in technology, it makes playing video games a lot more fun since you can physically tilt the motion-sensitive controller to move and rotate the platforms and environment on the screen in order to guide the LocoRoco to safety. So simple, even a child in kindergarten can do it!

When looking at today’s women in modern day society, would anyone think twice about the woman sitting outside and talking with her friends, while sipping on the overpriced, five-dollar Starbucks coffee in her hand, and petting her Chihuahua? Does anyone think that this woman gamer “in the closet” can play video games as well as men?

Well, they don’t look like gamer chicks.

Herein lies the stereotyping of women video gamers. Two basic types are:

1.      The fat, geeky, weaboo gamer girl that sits in front of the computer all day. Zits covering her face as she survives off of delivery pizza and is surrounded by anime mangas, plushies, and even has a yaoi initiation paddle. Seems to me they will be forever alone.

2.      The hot, sexy, Triforce-tramp-tattooed-on-her-back-while-licking-her-Xbox 360-remote kind of gamer girl. Posting NSFW self-validating nudies with gaming merch only to get brownie points from the male community, only to get free DLC from pathetic, virgin male gamers (or from those annoying 10-year-olds).

Even so, it doesn’t matter WHAT we look like. Women like to play video games just as much as men do (we just kick more ass). Laid back games like LocoRoco and Legend of Zelda are easy and fun to play, which is why women mostly prefer these types of games. It suits them fine when they don’t have to reach level 10 as a Night Elf Hunter to obtain their first combat pet. However, there ARE women who are part of the hardcore gaming community. Take, for example, the PMS Clan, which is the world’s largest community of girl gamers, that sign up for state and national gaming tournaments that play even the most violent of games (e.g. Dead Space 2)!

All in all, women can really be really awesome if they wanted to, but we prefer to enjoy our games in a leisurely pace. Screw Barbie and her 52-year-old dream of becoming Ken’s wife! Forget that stupid NintenDogs game (I got major bored with it after 3 days)! We are gamer girls and we love all kinds of video games.

So the next time you’re online, playing your MMORPG, remember that the female-portrayed character that you’re talking to may actually be female who can actually kick your puny butt.

  1. PMS clan is a joke. They’re all marketed. It’s just fanservice.
